I've owned my '93 9000CSE Turbo since fall of 2001. First time Saab
owner but long time Saab admirer. Love the car, wouldn't trade it for
anything else (except maybe add a '93 900 2-dr SPG Turbo).

As with any Euro car, always know the full service history of a car
you're looking at. A well-maintained, one-owner Saab with 150,000 miles
may be much better than one with dubious service history with 75,000 miles
on
the clock. Check thoroughly with the owner's local Saab dealer and/or Saab
USA before negotiating price. The new generation, or NG, 9000s between
'93-'98 are quite reliable overall. BUT a few major items should be
checked by a certified Saab-dealer mechanic equipped with the ISAT and
TechII
electronic diagnostic tools :

1) Transmission (if automatic). These can be frail and may cost upwards
of $5K to replace. Manual trannies are known to last the lifetime of the
car.
2) Automatic Climate Control (ACC) system
3) Electronic Throttle System (ETS) and Traction Control System (TCS):
this is integrated and were offered in US/Canada between '92 and '95.
Often problematic and unreliable. When malfunctioning it forces car into
'limp-home mode'. Can be expensive to diagnosis and repair. Try to avoid
models with ETS/TCS if possible.

Overall, 9000s are 'more car' than a NG 900 ('94-'98), and are built to
last hundreds of thousands of miles if well cared for, as good as a
Mercedes-Benz, Volvo or BMW. Yes, some components are less reliable and
can be costly, but that's no different than most other Euro makes. The
hatchback models (CS, CSE, Aero) are much much more desirable than the
sedans (CD, CDE) due to more room and versatility. And you can watch
jaws drop as you open the rear hatch and show people just how much room
there is in the rear, and that's before you fold the rear seats down, for
a
total of about 56 cubic litres of cargo room. Not to mention the
hatchbacks just look soooo much better than the ungainly sedans.

Anyway I can easily write a book on this, but I'll simply include a few
links as well as my own compilations from places like The Saab Network
(www.saabnet.com). David Prantl on the TSN digest is very knowledgeable
with 9000s (he owns like 10 of 'em) and is always an excellent fellow to
ask.

Ours is a 1994 CSE 5sp non-turbo, with 90K miles. It's been through
two DI cassettes, clutch master/slave cylinders (warranty), 2
batteries, 2 radios, the ECU cover recall, clutch job at 73 K, an AC
recharge (no leaks), a new washer bottle, a few hoses, assorted
electrical problems, and most recently a tensioner pulley failure
causing the belt to get chewed up. The leather's not in great shape,
but the headliner is fine.

Runs well, handles adequately but larger and less nimble than my
classic 900. Butt warmers and heater are hot, the AC is cold.
Tranny works fine, but people complain about the feel. No rust here
in Pennsylvania (my first 900--an 84--succumbed to frame cancer in
1995, causing us to buy the 9000, used one year (first owner was used
to the shorter gears of the 900, didn't like the 9000, and traded it
in on a 9000 with a slushbox).
