When my 86 9000T blew occassional blue smoke, it was
indeed oil seeping past the turbo bearing into the
exhaust. Burned oil deposits obstructed oil flow out
the turbo into the sump, thus oil was pushed into the
exhaust. I disassembled the turbo, cleaned, and
reassembled with new bearings and o-rings. The
original bearings and o-rings looked good, but I
ordered the parts before turbo disassembly. 90k miles
later, and the turbo is still going.

Since yours is a water cooled unit, oil cake is less
likely but still possible. To check you turbo, detach
the air inlet and check for smooth rotation, free play
and presence of oil. Loosen the oil return pipe and
slide it out of the way. Then check for obstruction.
