This happened to us on our '95 900. I managed to pry it open, but would =
have done it different if I had seen the solution first. What happens =
is that the mechanism comes loose inside the door. Once you get the =
door open, you still have to separate the door halves where it is bonded =
together. I recommend splitting the door open while it is still closed, =
this way you will do no damage to the rest of the mechanism. Once it is =
split open at the seam (I used a utility knife), it is very easy to =
release both latches. Then the only problem is glueing it all back =
together in a manner that looks ok.

I had that happen to me and I pushed in a screwdriver and pulled off the
upper retaining plate. It did not do to much damage and I was able to slide
in two nut plates over the edge of the plastic frame inside the glove box and
reattached the latch solidly, no damage visible. The spring inside the
mechanism broke on one side so that only one lock retracted. A quick visit to
the junk yard yielded a new replacement. I went so far as to switching the
tumbler so that the key would still work. If you can slide a thin narrow
blade to push the latch back you could open it without going through this
procedure. The latch will still have to be replaced. Good luck!
