Air Conditioning Removal and Repair

Having just moved to Misery ehhum Missouri, I'm discovering that I really
need to do something with my A/C. We had a few 90+ days in NY, but it seems
the norm here from July-Sept.

It has never worked, and I've done nothing to try & get it working. The
Compressor is not seized & will easily turn by hand. Initially I thought
the system wouldn't run because it was low on Freon. Well that was right.
seems that where the compressor line feeds into the evap unit? (in
firewall) the brass casing is cracked big time. This fact was hidden by
that putty you see on A/C lines occasionally.

So... I am faced with either repairing the system, or removing it. If it
is not going to work, or is too expensive to repair, I'd rather remove it.
First to simplify, second to improve air flow through the Radiator by
removing the condenser.

What would it be to replace the unit that goes into the firewall (in the
air intake), and how difficult is the job??

TIA
