Sputtering and Smoke

Can you help?????

I have a 1990 Saab 9000 Turbo Hatchback 5D 4-1985 2.0L DOHC Twin-Cam EFI
Intercooled Engine.

My location is South Texas. We took a trip to New Orleans in early August
- 100 degree heat driving. After being on the interstate for about 5 hours
from Corpus Christi to Beaumont, we stopped for gas. When we started up
again we got 10 miles down the road and the car sputtered, blew smoke and
stopped. I attempted to restart the vehicle. It would idle with my foot
on the accellerator but would miss terribly with smoke bellowing out of the
exhaust and would die once I tried to put it in gear.

We had to have it towed, rent a car and left our Saab with an import
mechanic whom we know. He drove the car off and on for the 3 days we were
gone but could not find a problem. Again, on the return trip home, we
stopped after 4 hours of continuous driving. This time, we did not even
turn the motor off. We just stopped on the side of the road. Again, the
Saab sputtered and missed horribly. This time, we were able to set it out
for about 2 hours in the shade and to let it completely cool down. Then,
it started and ran like a charm!

Since then, this problem has reoccured almost every time we take the Saab
on a trip of over an hour. Once the engine cools down to where I can touch
the block with my hand, then it will start up and run smooth. However,
every time now that I take into my mechanic locally, he will keep it and
drive it but cannot duplicate the condition to find out what is wrong with
the car.

Has this happened to you?
