9-5 Aero & 9-3 Viggen & 9000

Just wanted to share my experience at my dealer (in Belgium) that I had
yesterday. I took my trusted '94 9000 CSE in for an 180.000 km overhaul,
and while I waited saw that they had a 9.5 Aero in the showroom. I talked
to the dealer about the car because I would be interested in buying the 9.5
Estate Aero in another year or so, and I mentioned that the postings I had
read on the Aero on TSN mentioned lack of proper seats in front. He said
that Belgium now has the only Aero's with sports seats standard. That is
because Saab does not (as yet) offer them on the Aero since they have not
yet been certified (homologation not yet done), and the importer in Belgium
orders the car with normal seats, then takes out the original seats and
replaces them with the cushions of the Viggen. Presto, comfortable and
appropriately supporting bucket-type seats. I also got the chance to test
drive the 9.3 Viggen as he had one sitting outside. Knowing that this was
a 225 hp car, I left the dealership a bit gingerly, and on my first piece
of straight road, while in second and third gear, I pushed down on the
accelerator. I can only describe the resultant sensation as sheer
exhilaration!!! I guess some of you are used to this much power, and even
though my 900 SE V6 convertible still has a good 170 horses available, this
was in a totally different league. The car is quiet, does have some torque
steer, especially on rutted or uneven roads (like Belgium has more and
more), but the interior looks nice with the two-tone leather and the Viggen
logo's. And it MOVES... Real well. Yet, it also is comfortable and
relaxed driving at 50 km/h too, which is not always the case with
high-power cars. Yet before I knew it, I was pushing past 220 km/h and
still it was more than willing to go faster... The kicker to my day however
was still to come. The service on my 9000 being completed, I headed home.
Less than 5 kms from the dealership, I started hearing a strange noise from
the car while on the highway at 120 km/h. While attempting to figure out
what it was, there was a bang, and the engine quit. I was lucky to be near
an off-ramp, so I left the highway, and rolled to a stop by the side of the
road. Not wanting to try and start it again since the sound I had heard
sounded pretty definite, I went and called the dealer to come and pick me
up. While I was waiting for them, a guy of my local AAA club came driving
by, and he had a look at it. He asked me to try and start, and it
struggled mightily but unevenly, and did not catch. He said it didn't look
good. Just at that time, the mechanic from the dealership arrived, and
also a tow truck from the automobile club (VTB-VAB - THANKS, YOU GUYS!) who
proceeded to tow the car back to the dealer. My contract with the
automobile club entitles me to a replacement car, so I waited for the
verdict from the mechanics to see whether I would need one. What had
happened ? They had serviced the car, but failed to put oil in the engine.
So, it blew. New engine needed. While this saddens me for my poor trusted
car, at least it's getting a new lease of life courtesy of the dealer. I
just hope nothing else on the car while have taken a beating from this
ordeal, and I'm good for another 180.000 kms or so... And with less than
two hours delay, I was on the road again, this time in a brand new Ford
Focus 5-door. Nice car, and good looking too. But I can't wait to get my
9000 back. For her, the new year didn't start so well...

Greetings,
