Saab Collecting

Hello. This photo is probably not worthy of the photo
of the month but I just thought I'd share my
experience. I've collected 4 Saabs over the last year
to restore at least 2, and the last one I got was one I
bid on via eBay. I thought it would be nice to travel
to warm Waynesboro, VA from Chardon, OH (snow capital
of Ohio) to get away from the cold so I took my 92 year
old father along in our Aztek with a 6x12 trailer to
pick up the Saab on January 19.

It was as cold in VA as it was in Ohio, albeit sunny,
but the trip back started on a bad note when I merged
onto a 4 lane highway in heavy traffic to find the
trailer swaying violently at 65 mph. I pulled off to
check the load distribution. The seller said he had
parts in the trunk of the Saab but I didn't think much
about it. When I opened the trunk, I found brake drums,
steering spindles, a transmission, engine crankshafts,
wheels, starter motors, and more--a little too much
weight hanging out back.

After moving the trunk contents to the front of the
Saab, things went well until near Pittsburgh, PA. From
there to Chardon, approximately 120 miles, it was near
blizzard and took 5 hrs instead of the normal 2 hrs. It
was no fun pulling over 3,000 lbs on the hilly, winding
PA turnpike through wet, really slippery snow. It was a
lot worse, however, in Ohio, driving up route 44 and
west on route 322, pulling long steep hills, passing
other cars off the road in the ditch, but the Aztek AWD
really saved the day. I would have bet against it
pulling those hills with 3,000+ lbs behind it. Of
course, the weight distribution had much improved since
the trailer accumulated at least 200 pounds of slush on
its front end, that helped put weight on the Aztek.

Arriving home at 2 AM with my laughing father who's not
into vintage cars, I took the top photo. In the
morning, I took the bottom photo, with a guest on the
hood that looked appropriate. It only took me 4 hours
to go the last 200 feet to the barn out back, which I
built last summer for the Saabs, but the Saab is safely
stored away awaiting better days ahead.

My first, and best, Saab experience was a 1966 red
sedan I bought used in 1967--most fun I've ever had
driving. Hopefully, I'll be driving one again soon.
