Re: Toll Transponder - EZ-Pass

The _back_ of the typical EZ-Pass (where the Velcro is) is the antenna
side. It works best with that side pointed diagonally up, so that the
antenna is in focus with the lane transmitter (the white panel above the
lane) _before_ you're plumb under the lane transmitter.

As long as the coating at the top of the windshield isn't metallic, it
should work OK. Try temporarily fastening the xponder behind the
coating. Just use some tape, or hold it up there when you're going
through the toll plaza. If it works at the toll plazas you regularly
use, then mount it there with the supplied 'velcro' strips. You can
always pull it off and wave it around if it doesn't work at a different
toll location (ask me how I know about this).

As for personal experience, I have a '91 900 Convertible and a '97 Volvo
970, both with EZ Pass. On the 900, the xponder is mounted just behind
the mirror (and invisible to the driver). No problems.

The Volvo has the kind of coating you describe on the top of the
windshield, extending down a bit in front of the mirror (probably for
cosmetic reasons, to obscure the mirror mounting from outside the car).
I mounted the xponder below this strip and just to the right of the
mirror (right next to the Valentine). It's out of the driver's line of
sight, but more obtrusive to the passenger and works fine. Actually,
because it's lower down and at more of a tilt from vertical, the tag on
the Volvo gets recognized faster than the one on the Saab.
