Transmission Cooler

I mentioned my concerns about the smaller fluid capacity
automatic transmission cooler that replaced the leaky oem cooler.

To rephrase the question:

given that fluids (including automatic transmission fluid) expand
when heated, and

given that the transmission case design is not very large by volume
on the saab 9000t 1988 compared to other designs using similar
transmissions,

therefore, was the transmission cooler system and cooler lines
also designed to act as a expansion chamber for heated auto trans
fluid (in the same way the radiator has an expansion tank)?

I would like to determine if, by using a small displacement cooler
system, I have changed the total volume capacity (Just like if the
radiator expansion tank were busted and dumping coolant all over
the ground and not syphoning back into the radiator). And what
negative effects this might have on the transmission (overheating,
burning of trans oil, not enough fluid available for the torque
converter, etc.)
