Sounds exactly like the problem I had with my old 1984 900 where the master
cylinder failed. I just had it replaced (rather than it rebuilt with new
seals). On mine, you would push down on the pedal and if you kept a steady
pressure on it, it would be fine. But if you let off just a hair, the pedal
would sink to the floor losing all braking. You would have to take your foot
off and put it on again to reengage the brakes.

Don't strew around though, get it fixed ASAP. It will only get worse and it
sound like you are on the very edge of having no brakes.
