Heater Blower Motor

The heater blower motor on my '91 9000T has died.  When I got an estimate on
it, the dealer suggested that I also replace the resistor since it might have
failed bringing the blower motor down with it, and the heater core since the
core is still the original and it would only be another 30 minutes of labor
with the blower motor already out.  From what I've read on TSN, it sounds
like replacing the heater core is not bad advice, but I know nothing about
the resistor.  Is there any way I can test it?  I did measure the voltage
going into the blower motor at 12v any time the ACC was turned on, regardless
of set fan speed and temperature, so I was thinking it might have another way
to regulate fan speed since the fan was not constantly blowing full blast
before it stopped working.  The quote for the whole job was between
$1200-$1400, which is a bit much for me right now.  How difficult would this
be to do myself?  I'm pretty good at body trim and fittings, but haven't done
much ! under the hood.  Also, I notice that the heater core is available with
a conversion kit.  Would my car require this? All advice is very much
appreciated.
