Re: 2.3 Balance Shaft Chain

I was quoted $1100 just for parts and $700 labor from my local indy to
do the complete timing chain job on my 92 9000 turbo(120K). The dealer
wanted $2260. I'm still amazed at what the parts cost . I've done plenty
of V8 timing chain jobs for under $100. But then again, this is a Saab!
The indy told me that for some reason the parts on the earlier 2.3 are
more expensive than the newer 93 + up.

I ended up doing the job myself. It was very time consuming, about 20
hours. The most worn parts were the balance shaft gears, which can not
be checked any other way. I replaced all of the guides, all gears, both
chains, both tensioners, and the seals. I replaced the upper mounts
which were long over due. I also replaced the water pump since it was
already off. After it was all back together I discovered the harmonic
balancer was bad so I replaced that also(should of checked it before
hand!). Parts cost me some where around 13 - $1400. I bought most of
them through Trollhattan. There were no special tools required besides a
torque wrench and a home made tool for the serpentine belt, but an
impact would be a great help for the harmonic balancer bolt. As far as
damaging the head gasket, just be very careful when removing the timing
chain cover.

Good luck . Take your time and feel free to email me with any questions.

John
