Replacement of the water pump on a 93 9000 is pretty strightforward. First
obtain a copy of the 9000 repair manual that is available at almost any Saab
dealer (est. $25). Second, I would use a genuine Saab pump; the quality and
fit won't be a question.

Allow an afternoon, although it can be accomplished in as little as two
hours. Basic metric wrenches are all that's required except for a SAAB belt
tension restrainer (shaped like a U with a broad base), only available from
a SAAB dealer. None of the things mentioned below require any additional
SAAB tools.

While you have things apart there are a few other things to consider: 1)
condition of the serpentine belt, pulleys and tensioner, 2) replace the
antifreeze; don't reuse the old, 3) replace the thermostat (SAAB); your
half-way there having already drained the antifreeze, 4) check the
crankshaft pulley to see if it has started to separate (common problem), 5)
check for oil leakage around the crankshaft seal, 6) check the front lower
motor mount (you're looking at it after you pull the fender well, and 6)
check for leakage around the windshield washer fluid tank mounting studs and
check valves.

I realize that the above may sound like a lot. However, most of it is
simple inspection. If you do find anything you've already done a good chunk
of the labor just getting to it. Again, I recommend using only SAAB parts.
I don't believe the savings on aftermarket parts is really worth it.
