The only reason to take your AC system to the shop BEFORE you work on it is
to recycle the freon or R134 that's already in it. If it's already leaked
out, then just go to work. You need to have a vacuum put on it right before
you charge it to remove as much of the contaminants (water and air mostly) as
possible. Remember, any gases left in the system when you charge it are
taking up precious volume that could be used for refrigerant!
