Bad Pinion Bearings

I have a hard to track down symptom. I hear a (rather loud) hum when I am
driving down the road. The sound does not appear to change if I put the
car in neutral. Here is what I have done: balance all tires - no good
check inner CV joint - boot was bad, but joint feels really good and was
still full of grease but.. found small indents in inner driver cups (where
driveshaft meets tranny) check wheel bearing - jack car up and hold one
front wheel while letting other spin. No real bad noise came out

So, what do you think? Someone mentioned bad pinion bearings in tranny. Is
this the right symptom? I don't want to replace the wheel bearing unless
it is bad. Are the small indents the cause? They are very slight (not
easy to find) and the car does have 148k miles.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated
