My son's 84 900T started to overheat when in traffic but cool down when on a
run on the highway, although not to normal. He removed the thermostat & the
fault persisted. Shorting across the fan switch with the ignition on did not
bring on the main fan, which had been running a few days earlier & had
continued after the engine was switched off, as it was meant to do. Turning
on the AC didn't bring on the other radiator fan, but the freon is low, so no
real surprise. Power directly to either radiator fan made them run and
driving the car with a fan hotwired to the battery seemed to cure the
problem. He drove the car some distance like this and discovered that his
wiring job had become disconnected but that the car no longer overheated. The
water pump doesn't leak (it is about 40,000 miles old as is the reconditioned
radiator) and belts are tight.

My theory is perhaps some debris or blockage in the cooling system which
cleared itself spontaneously or an intermittently functioning delay timer
relay preventing the fan coming on some of the time. He has yet to bypass the
relay to test the latter hypothesis.

Anyone out there have any suggestions? How would one go about testing the
output of the water pump without making a mess?

Thanks for any help.

Geoff Barst
