Cut Out

Recently my '81 Saab 900S three door, quit. Here are the symptoms;
occasionally, while driving at highway speeds, it would cut out, and
immediately be fine again. To someone who didn't drive it daily, it
would probably not have been noticeable. Then about two weeks ago, at 20
mph, it just quit. It cranks, and occasionally tries to start, but no
dice. I thought I detected a 'lean burn' smell, like when an EGR valve
goes bad, and a vehicle is running lean, but that might be my
imagination.
After pulling it home, I changed the fuel filter. No change. My
Haynes manual, suggested a plugged fuel vent, and suggested removing the
fuel cap to test. It started, ran (though just a tad rough) then quit
dead, like the switch had been shut off. I can hear the pump run when I
turn the key on, and there is fuel after the fuel filter, though I don't
know at what pressure. When I took the pump to local shops and asked
them to test the pressure, they looked at me like I had lobsters
crawling out of my ears.
My Chiltons manual, said check the fuel injector contacts in the
distributor. After hours spent taking the distributor apart, I found no
such contacts. Didn't exactly boost my confidence in my Chiltons manual!
lol There is enough spark energy to activate the timing light, and it
did run briefly after reassembling the distributor, so I think the
problem is fuel related.
My Haynes manual also suggests the fuel pressure regulator. The
symptoms they described in relation to the failure of this part, sound
exactly like what was happening to my beloved old Saab.
Anyone have any ideas? Fuel pump is REALLY expensive, so if anyone
knows of cheaper fixes, I'm all ears! lol
Anyway, hope to hear from someone soon. I don't want to retire my
faithful old $40.00 car!
