9X Impressions

When I saw the newspapers ads that the 9x was on display at the venue
for the Academy Awards here in Los Angeles, I went by to have a look.
I'd wanted to see the 9x at the L.A. Auto Show, but couldn't because it
was in Detroit for the show there that occurs at about the same dates.

The car looks cool. Its styling is not boring or timid. When I saw it
in person, compared the photos, the front end looks bigger to me, more
like a Corvette's dimensions that a Miata's, although the styling
doesn't look American at all (which I take as a plus). The rear half of
the vehicle reminds me of a woody wagon somehow. It's not that it has
wood panels (which it obviously doesn't), but more the mood it
conveys--it seems playful and up for active sports, although it also
seems muscular in its stance, almost menacing.

I hope Bob Lutz green lights the project. I'd buy one if they built it
and it were priced right. Although there's no car directly equivalent
to the 9x, its prospective buyers would likely consider the Audi TT,
which when outfitted with the Hi-output Turbo and 6-speed AWD has a 2002
MSRP of 38,900 USD (dealer invoice just a tad over $35k). Saab says
it's wanting to dramatically increase its units sold in the next few
years. I think Saab would sell a lot more 9x's if they built it to sell
in the low 40's, and didn't let it balloon to 50 or 60 thousand dollars.
