Coolant Leak

My brother has an '86 9000. There is coolant on the floor of the
passenger compartment. I have not seen the car since the leak began, I do
not have the Haynes manual in front of me, and I haven't seen the
replacement part. So call me ignorant.
When the heater core is replaced in a SAAB 9000, is the water valve
replaced too, or is that a separate part? If the water valve is leaking,
would the coolant go into the engine compartment or into the passenger
compartment? If the leak is in a hose where it connects to the heater
core (or heater core assembly, as the case may be), would the coolant go
into the engine comparmtne or into the passenger compartment? Finally, we
suspect that the heater core is a really costly part. Is there any known
substitute, or does he just have to pay the price?
Thanks, Blair
