The shift light on by '92 9000 came in early, but its purpose is to show
you the shift points to maximize economy, not acceleration. I fixed
mine some time ago by taking the bulb out. Driving styles vary of
course -- I normally shift into 5th straight from 3rd around 40 mph for
normal driving, or around 60 if accelerating to get on a highway. Most
of my driving is on flat country roads in South Jersey. I don't push
the car too hard since I want it to last. At 165k, I have the original
clutch and get ~27 mph.
