It is normal to see temperature gauge needle rise to 10 o'clock in
stop and go traffic. In heavy driving conditions the needle may
raise just below red line which is still safe, I have experienced
this. Owner's manual advises to ease up once the needle reaches the
red zone.

Some users have switched to a lower temperature thermostat (82 deg
C) and thermoswitch accordingly. With this setup the needle will
stay at a lower range. I would not recommend replacing only the
thermostat with a lower value one and leaving the oem fan switch.

Speaking of the other makes, cars with belt-driven fan stay at a
constant temperature because they have continuous air flow through
the radiator even when standing still. Other makes also often use a
larger scale on the temperature gauge which results in less needle
fluctuation or place the temperature sender unit in another part of
the engine with a more constant temperature.
