Timing Chain

My '95 900S 2.3 began making lots of chain noise about 6 months ago - while
I still had two months' worth of warrantee left... My local dealer (before
we moved) paid no heed, so we forgot about it. Now the warrantee's gone,
and the noise was getting so loud and insistent that I brought it to our
new Saab dealer... who (correctly) diagnosed the noise as bad timing chain
/ sprocket problems. The sprocket's teeth were considerably chewed up.
Three thousand dollars later, the car is all back together and quiet once
again. The car, however, has only 47,000 miles!! Could this timing chain
problem have been caused by a bad tensioner? Or would there be some other
culprit, especially at this relatively low mileage?
