Discussions on the Direct Ignition Cassette (coil module) come up from time
to time on SaabNet. While opinion varies the consensus is that the early
modules (90-92) are significantly more prone to failure than the later ones.
There were, infact, design changes. While by no means unheard of, a failure
at 30K is a bit unusual. Call it luck of the draw. Some folks have had
success in getting Saab to reimburse them for similar failures in cars so
recently out of warranty. While I have no idea who to call I'd recommend
you give it try. My 95 900 SET is at 108K on it's original Ignition
Cassette so based on my experience I wouldn't bother getting a spare.

Regarding the whirring noise when turning, it is most likely the pump. The
pump is not very quiet to start with and can get very loud when the power
steering fluid gets low. Check the power steering fluid first. On my 900,
I occasionally have to add a bit of power steering fluid because I've found
the hoses 'weep' where the rubber parts are joined with the metal bits.
It's never been enough to justify the hassle and expense of replacement and
surprisingly it's not even messy. I just wipe the hoses with a few paper
towels every time I change the oil.
