Re: DI Cassettes

Perusing the parts catalogs, I was able to come up with this
'history' of DI cassettes. My info is current through the first half
of the 1999 model year, and includes the 9-5 and 9-3.

With attached cable (DI/APC):
75 84 204 - original P/N exchangeable coils
74 85 808 - 88-92 P/N exchangeable coils

No attached cable (Trionic - 10-pin connector part of cassette)
91 34 404 - 93-94 non-exchangeable coils up to motor S075975
91 78 955 - 95- ALL prior part numbers supercede to this one. This
unit is used on 9000, NG 900 and 9-3 cars.

If replacing a cassette that has the attached cable, harness number
93 21 787 is also needed.

9-5 Trionic T-7
91 87 980 - same connector style as the 91 87 955, but black painted
instead of red. Used in 9-5 cars, and the 9-3 Viggen.

As far as I know the ~955 DI cassette is the last of the non-T7
units. I don't know if there are any other part numbers for the black
cassette.

As for the DI cassettes being low tech, don't think that they are
just 4 coils in a pack. The DI cassette tells the DI/APC and Trionic
computers when combustion has occurred and in what cylinder, and in
the Trionic cars, the DI cassette **IS** the knock sensor. They are
more sophisticated than you might think!

Just to confound us more, there is a special Blue cassette. The only
'special' thing about it is that it is sold through Kent-Moore as a
test unit. The 'known good' cassette that the tech might swap in just
to make sure. It's a blue not unlike the Swedish flag, and has parts
of the edge seal cut out. The blue is so the tech knows which
cassette is in there, and the cutouts so that nobody can just repaint
it...Electrically, it's a ~955 cassette.
