ZF Transmission and Cooler

After going through a second transmission change/rebuilt on a 1988 9k
Turbo, the trans cooler was changed to the American type and fitted
to the back of the radiator (above the turbo, before the A/C
compressor).
Seems that the reason for the original and first replacement trans
failure was lack of fluid. This due to the vulnerable and cheaply
built original equipment trans cooler located below the radiator and
just behind the air dam. I went through a couple of these between the
original and second replacement trans.

Question One:: I bought a new trans oil dipstick (with the plastic
tip that always seems to fall off) at the dealer for $40 and I can
never seem to get a decent reading of the fluid level. Was this due
to the different cooler I have on? (Keep in mind low capacity and I
have fewer fluid lines running around compared to original
equipment).

Question Two: Was the change in location of the trans cooler in later
models more successful (between side of radiator and right-side
headlight assembly)? Is there a way to retro-fit the newer design to
my 88?

Question Three: How much fluid capacity total do I really need? I
recall something about the ZF on the 9k having a small coolant
capacity compared to most other makes, which leaves less margin for
overheating problems. Thus by using a standard American aftermarket
trans oil cooler am I failing to address the real need for more
capacity in the cooler system?

At this point I tend to overfill and the excess leaks out of the
trans casing (erring on the side of too much fluid, with possible
problems)
