Engine Hunting

I have an 87 900S that has done something weird since the day I acquired
her: the motor, when you start it cold, does something that I think the
manual describes as 'hunting'. It periodically revs itself, like someone
sitting in it and pressing the accelerator then letting off, and again, and
again... Is this normal, and if not, what causes it? It doesn't seem to
affect the performance any, it is just annoying to listen to (although it
does compensate for the neighbor's nasty little dog barking at me,
especially when the exhaust is in various states of not there).

Thanks in advance,

Tracy Hill
