I recall having a similar problem. I adjusted the shift lever. The
procedure is described in Bentley, which I do not have with me at the
moment. So what follows come from my memory, a very unreliable device.

A rod projects from the rear of the transmission. Pushing and twisting
this rod shifts the internals of the transmission. A rod projects forward
from the shift mechanism. The two rods are connected by a clamp. Loosen
the clamp. (Easy to say, I found it hard to do from the topside) Now comes
the alignment part. Here's where I'm fuzzy. My '83 had alignment holes
drilled into the shift mechanism and shift rod. When I put a drift in both
the alignment was complete and I tightened the clamp. Those holes are
located under the rug forward of the shift mechanism. Lots of stuff to
remove. I believe your model has a special tool to get the rods to line
up. Perhaps someone on the list can take over from here.
