Fan Thermoswitch

I had my '90 900S in the shop today to have the thermostat replaced.
The $40 labor charge seemed reasonable, given it meant I didn't have to
mess with draining any coolant or getting my hands dirty. :) But
that's not what I'm writing about.

The mechanic suggested that I might want to replace the original
thermoswitch that controls the fan with a version that turns the fan on
at a lower coolant temperature. Now granted, the temperature gauge does
get up in the top quarter of the gauge if I'm in heavy traffic, before
the fan kicks in and sends it back down to the middle range where it
normally sits. But it's done that the whole life of the car, and other
Saab owners tell me their cars do that too.

I decided against having the switch replaced at that time, reasoning
that the car's been doing that for the last nearly thirteen years, and
there's been no apparent harm to the car. Seems to me if the engineers
at Saab felt that was an appropriate temperature at which to turn on the
fan, who am I to argue? Why mess with it now? But I thought I'd get a
second opinion.

Anyone reading this hear of swapping a perfectly good thermoswitch with
one that switches on at a lower temperature? Anyone think that doing so
would be an important contribution to the health of the engine?

Just curious what others think about this.

Pete
