>My father also has a 96 two stroke year 1963.

I also had a 1963 model 96 two stroke, white, with a three speed
transmission, which I purchased in about 1971, while a college student. It
had over 100,000 miles on it at the time. Unfortunately, where I live, in
Horseheads, New York State, USA, road salt is placed on the highways in the
winter time. By 1973 and 1974, the leading arms of the rear axle assembly
were rusting at the point where the leading arms attach to the underbody of
the Saab, forward of the rear axle. I had them welded back on twice, each
time with a larger piece of sheet metal welded to the bottom pan of the
car. The second set of steel plates began to rust around the edges about a
year later, and to make a familiar high pitched noise from the flexing of
the metal. I decided then that the car was becoming a death trap which had
to be disposed of. It is too bad since in all other respects it was a very
strong and durable car. It was very easy to work on. I remember changing
the rubber inserts for the paddles in the universal joints on the drive
shaft, outdoors under the proverbial tree, with a just a few simple
wrenches. I kept spare spark plugs and a spark plug socket wrench on a
ratchet handle in the car at all times since the plugs could easily foul
up, especially in damp weather. I got very good (and very fast) at
cleaning up oiled spark plugs and using them again. Almost everything on
the car could be changed, including the engine, with very simple tools and
limited mechanical skills. Try to do that on a modern Saab!

Your father's 1963 has had the advantage of a climate which does not
require ice to be removed from the roads for several months of the
year. The local Saab dealer tells me that he would love to get his hands
on model 96 in good condition. There are very few of them left here. I
feel a certain amount of nostalgia for the beast.
