Re: Turbo Cool Down

I find it hard to believe that Saab would advise no cool-down period on
water cooled turbos if doing so were to lead to premature failure. My '88
(first water cooled year) 900T had 152K miles on the original turbo at the
time I sold it. It was often driven by others in my household who I know
for a fact never observed a cool-down regimen. In '87 when I bought the
car the dealers were still advising a brief cool-down. But I think that may
have been a conditioned response based on years of telling customers to let
the turbo cool-down before switching off the engine.

If you are worried about the turbo bearings cooking the engine oil I
suggest running 100% synthetic oil which breaks down at a higher
temperature. The combo of the water jacket and the synthetic oil should
eliminate the need for a cool-down period.

BTW I still wouldn't race the engine and then immediately shut off the
ignition!

Also note that Saab's warranty exposure in 2000 is higher than it was in
1987 when my '88 900T was sold. My '88 had a 3 year/36,000 mi. warranty.
My '99 9-5 has a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty. And no cool-down
recommendation. I have to assume the Saab guys are rational. :-)
