ECU & Instrument Cluster & Brakes
Posted by Tom Chappell - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3 (more from Tom Chappell - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3) on Thu, 3 Jul 2003 11:29:39

I have a multi part question. I have a 2002 9-3 SE with Premium package and
heated seats that has a Speedo error. When they hooked up the computer to the
ECU and the Speedo; the ECU read 50mph and the Instrument cluster read 53mph
at an indicated 55mph on the computer diagnostic machine (I was checking out
a Speedo reading of 69 but clocked at 66 on those roadway signs on PA Route
81). Is this a normal occurrence and within tolerance (Like my shop said) or
should I find someone else to run the same check? Will these two offsets
actually cause any anomalies in my car's behavior? I am asking because I have
a recurring tach that dips below idle (Any time cold or hot) and I have a
flat spot (Hesitation) that occurs between 5000-5500rpm when I am
accelerating (I have been using 92-93 octane).

Second question is that I don't have any brakes when they are wet (From deep
puddles or when driving in the rain). Does anyone know of anything that can
be done for this problem? Saab does have a special brake pad that is used in
the Scandinavian markets that is designed for cold and wet weather. These
brake pads will not last as long as the original pads, but will be very
helpful for special conditions of wet, cold and very low mileage. The dealer
can order a set of these pads for you under part number 50 62 211
(Approximately $92 through my car dealer plus $58 for install). Or Ferodo
makes replacement front pads (Part FCP 590 (front) DS2500) for ~$104. I was
wondering if anyone knows of any brake kits with rotors and pads that replace
the Saab OEM brakes, which would work for normal everyday driving (not a race
replacement)? I am not hard on my brakes because I drive mainly to work,
which is less than 2 miles away; so the brakes never have a chance to heat up
(Hence why I can't use race compound pads). If anyone knows of a fix for this
annoying and potentially disastrous problem please let me know. I was
recently in a downpour around June 20th and had no brakes will a thousand
stupid truckers and had no brakes so I want to fix this problem ASAP. If I
was towing I would imagine this would be deadly. Please reply to me as I won't
be at work for a few days.

Thanks All

Tom C
