All SAAB service literature and many knowledgeable SAAB technicians insist
that the drain plug head is 13mm.

Don't believe it !

A 13mm 12-point is almost guarranteed to strip. A 13mm 6-point should be
OK, but not fool-proof.

Try a high-quality 6-point 1/2' socket instead. 1/2' is 12.54mm, and fits
very snugly (perfectly) on the plug. I use this socket exclusively on the
drain plugs in all my SAABs, and there is absolutely no way to strip them
this way.

C900 cars from way back used to have a true 17mm-head drain plug. This got
superceeded to the smaller one, probably to reduce the number of
stripped/cracked C900 tranny cases from monkey-brained overtightening.

Finally, I don't think SAAB drain plugs are anything exotic, or even
terribly special. Try to find an aftermarket/generic plug with the same
thread and length. You might just find one with a larger head (17mm, 5/8',
or whatever) that is more strip-proof.
