In the front wall of your trunk, way forward under the space where the top
gets stowed, at the very right end (in the US, anyway) is a flap of carpet.
Under this is a valve that bypasses the hydraulic lines between the pump
and the top cylinders. If you open this valve a bit (my owner's manual says
open=clockwise, but it also says close=clockwise so it probably opens
counter-clockwise like you would expect) you can move the top manually.

There is also that metal crank with the spring shaft, in the toolkit. I
thought it was for operating the top, but I can't remember how or where to
use it, and I can't find any mention of it in my owner's manual or Bentley.
Does anybody remember?

If your motor runs but the top doesn't move, maybe your bypass valve is
already open? Or you are out of hydraulic fluid (check the reservoir under
the back seat). Or one of your hydraulic lines is broken (but it seems you
would have noticed the mess...)
