Cruise Control Malfunction

The cruise control stopped functioning and I need some advice.
(Cruise light on dash illuminates, no cruise function. Brake lights are
OK, Fuse is intact)
Haynes manual says there are two types (vacuum actuated and stepper
motor activated). A quick under hood inspection was of little help.
Followed the single cable from the throttle cam on the intake manifold
back through the false firewall....it disappeared into the wall on the
drivers side. I haven't had the time to remove the cover of the false
firewall and see where it goes.
So my question is this: Can anyone tell me what version I have either
from experience or from the little description I have been able to
provide?
Also, for either type, the location of the major components? (e.g.,
stepper motor or vacuum servo, etc. For either, I assume the
electrical disconnect/vacuum dump switches are still on the clutch and
brake pedal?

Aside from the typical loose vacuum hoses and ill positioned switches,
any other failure modes of note?

Thanks
John
