Comment arising from [14801] Re: Automatic Transmission Life -
transmission slipping when cold.

My 1989 900T Coupe started having transmission problems on
really cold days in winter 1997 (I live in Christchurch, New
Zealand). Initially there was sufficient drive to reverse out of the
garage, then the car would lose drive. Once the car had warmed
up - no problems.

I noticed when checking the dipstick (during the period while drive
wasn't available) that the transmission fluid level would shoot up .
The transmission specialists found leaky O rings behind the
transmission plate and replaced them hoping it would fix the
problem - which it did.

The theory was that the seals weren't doing their job - when
the weather was really cold the old seals (which had become too
rigid) were letting air in the system - hence the rise in the fluid until
things warmed up and sealed properly.
