I own a 95' 900 SE Turbo 5-speed w/78k on it. It is in pristine =
mechanical shape. I service it well before any Saab recommendations. The =
last Saab I owned (87' 9000) ran 280k with only minor services and a =
5-speed trans. replacedno39sdcx6spamx782 225k. My 900 I disappointedly feel will not be =
as strong. So I maintain it better. I have always used Valvoline 50/50 =
blend and changed at the max. my oil every 3,000mil w/ filter. Even =
though Saab recommend 5k-7k between changes, I would not even consider =
that long of a duration on any engine, especially one with a turbo =
charger. The turbo bearings high heat can 'cook' the oil and create =
pre-mature turbo bearing failure.=20

My Saab recently has gone through a servicing of my 5-speed =
transmission. My shop quoted from Saab recommendations in a recent =
bulletin to upgrade and use full synthetic gear oil. My shop insisted =
that I follow Saab's recommendations. I have read and told that a car =
under 10k and over 50k should not be converted to synthetics. Second, =
the seals might leak unless you are in that mileage zone. But, I have =
always followed factory guidelines. My shop assured me this is not the =
case with Saabs. I did switch as they suggested and it caused my =
transmission to grind between shifts. I was not happy We switched back =
to the regular Saab mineral based gear oil for 95 900's and it seems =
that the problem is solved for now I hope! Well, I guess my shop and =
the Saab bulletin upgrade were both wrong. I do recommend though, that =
you use only Saab specific gear oil for your year and model. Also, use =
the factory recommended trans. oil service schedule for this =
maintenance.

I have used Mobil 1 and filter no39sdcx6spamx782 4K on another vehicle (my 1990 350ci =
Silverado w/150k) and found it not work as greatly as they claimed it =
should. Also, I have researched (and had a discussion with a Saab =
factory mechanic from Sweden) that unless you are racing at Le Mans on =
weekends, the most important and cheapest preventative maintenance for =
your engine is frequent oil and quality filter changes. He said mineral =
based oils such as (5-30 or 10-30 Valvoline, Mobil or Castrol 50/50 =
blends) seem to work well, as long as they are the proper viscosity for =
your conditions and kept clean. He especially recommended 50/50 blends =
for turbo engines because of the added turbo heat. He also recommended =
to allow your turbo to 'spool down' or cool (let it idle for a 30-60 =
seconds) before you shut off your engine. Still your car, your choice. =
My personal recommendation from experience is to use a 50/50 Valvoline =
blend every 3k with a fresh filter. Cost wise it probably calculates out =
the same if not slightly cheaper in the long run then Mobil 1 every =
5k!!!

Good Luck,
Angelo K.
