There's no 'coolant' in an automatic transmission system - the ATF does the
cooling. Or, more to the point, you want to get rid of the heat that the
transmission puts into the ATF.

I'd like to know what you mean by 'standard American aftermarket trans oil
cooler' - if you mean the kind with the tube that goes back and forth with
a bunch of fins soldered to it, those are nowhere near as efficient as the
aluminum stacked-plate type used as OEM by Saab. Stacked-plate mfrs.
include Earl's, Setrab, Mocal, and others, and are available from Earl's
dealers, Racer Wholesale, Pegasus, etc. Setrab OEMd Saab's oil and
transmission coolers for a bunch of years.

I just got done mounting two Earl's coolers on the front of my '91 SHO -
which sees a certain amount of track use - a little one for the power
steering and a bigger one for the transaxle (it's a manual-transmission,
but the Quaife diff it now has in it generates a lot of heat when used
hard, so it now has a cooler and an external electric pump.)

I haven't been able to cook the transmission in our '92 9000, but I did
cook two in our '92 Infiniti Q45. That car definitely could have used an
external cooler - but I didn't really think about it until we were ready to
get rid of the car.

John.
