Transmission

I have a 1985 900 Turbo (manual) with 60,000 miles. Last summer, the clutch
went and was replaced. Since then I have had intermittent problems shifting
(difficulty getting in and out of gear). Several checks at the local Saab
dealer have been unable to duplicate the problem. Last week, while driving
on the freeway, I hear a sound like the under carriage was being scraped by
rocks or branches. (there were none around ) I then noticed white smoke in
both the back and front. I limped to my local dealer, and have now been
informed that there is a hole in the transmission box, which they believe was
caused by something broken inside the transmission. The dealer wants $400 to
take apart and inspect the transmission and expects me to need to replace it
to the tune of $3,000. Does this make sense? How should I approach this
problem?
