Thought I'd share some insights from repairing the high-mount brake
lights (Liddy lights*) on our 1994 9000 CSE. Anyone with a Saab site
is welcome to add this to their FAQs.

This and the fender-mounted turn signals use a W5W bulb. This is a
wedge-base bulb that looks like a 194 bulb, but isn't. The 194 is
easier to find, but isn't as bright. The correct cross-ref for the
Sylvania bulb is #2825, and for Philips is #12961.

At some point during the 1994 model year, Saab switched housings for
these lights, because the catalogs and the electronic gizmo in the
parts store all tell you it's some other bulb, with a bayonet mount.
That obviously wasn't right for our car. If you have a 1994, open it
up and check before going to buy bulbs.

Get a long stick or pole to push the brake pedal with, and you won't
need a helper to tell you which lights are working.

You'll need a T20 Torx driver to remove the lens screws, the lens
pulls straight off then. There are four bulbs inside, and they just
pull straight out, no twisting. If there's a narrow-looking spot in
the bulb filament, the bulb is burned out.

If the bulb contacts appear corroded, you'll want to clean up the
rest of the assembly, because it will be corroded too. That in fact
may be the cause of your lights being out rather than the bulbs.
With a plain screwdriver, push the catches inward to release the main
assembly of the light. Twist the white plastic bulb holders to
remove them. There will probably be corrosion on the contacts of the
holder and on the circuit board you just unscrewed them from. Touch
them up with a file and re-assemble.

Check that all the lights are working before you put the main
assembly back on, and again before you put the lens back on. It's
possible for the holders to twist a little and end up not making good
contact. Make sure the rear washer nozzle is in place before putting
on the lens. The lens needs to go straight in, not tilted in,
otherwise it will hang up on the washer nozzle.
