Check Engine Light

Help!
   The 'check engine' light on my '86 900S has been coming on in the last
few days.
   After a few times I've observed this:
1) It will not come on if the engine is started from stone cold (IE:
overnight).
2) It will come on if I leave it for 30-45 min (like going to the
supermarket) after being fully warmed up.
3) On long trips, started from stone cold, it will not come on.

Now this part:
   I finally noticed that the light flashes in a pattern:
four flashes at approximately 1/2 sec intervals, followed by a 1 sec delay.
All times are approximate.
   I didn't think that an '86 had a sophisticated enough computer to do that.
So, what is it telling me, and why only under certain conditions?

   I asked my mechanic if it could be a bad connection, he thought not. The
repetitive pattern of the light does indicate that's it's not an
intermittent/bad connection.

I'm hesitant now to drive any long distances.
