Heated Seat Thermoswitch

I had to have the leather sewn back together on my '91 900 turbo SPG
driver's seat cushion. When I replaced the seat cover, the driver's seat
heater no longer worked. After I took the seat cover back off, I looked for
broken heater wires, but didn't find anything. Continuity was good in all
the circuits, and there was power at the connector under the seat. After
isolating connector wires one by one (using jumpers), I finally determined
that the voltage in the circuit went to zero when the BLUE wire (pin 1 in
the connector) was connected, but was 12-14 volts (and the heat worked) when
the blue wire was NOT connected. I traced the blue wire to what seems to be
the thermoswitch (or thermostat???) in the driver's seat cushion (it was a
small cylindrical pointy-tipped black epoxy thing connecting the blue wire
with a black wire).

Here's the weird thing...when I removed the thermoswitch and connected the
blue/black wires directly, there was NO heat. If I left the wires
unconnected, there WAS heat. Exactly opposite from what I expected. I also
notice that (with the wires unconnected) the heat comes on full-blast, no
matter whether the dash rheostat is set at 1, 2, or 3 (it still turns off on
zero).

Is that the way the circuit is supposed to work? I can't tell from the
Bentley wiring diagram exactly how the thermoswitch is supposed to interact
with the dash rheostat.

Thanks,

Mike
