Richard,

Tough problem. Dot 5 is great stuff. I use it in both my bikes with great
success. The problem is that Dot 5 and Dot 3 or 4 are not compatible and
should not be mixed. When I switched my bikes I did a complete
disassembly of the brakes and cleaned every bit with soap and water. This
would be difficult with a car. Also I believe Dot 5 is not recommended for
ABS since it is more compressible and is not as slippery.

If this was my car I would trust nobody and make the determination myself.
I would go tot he store and buy small containers of Dot 4 and 5. Put a bit in
a shot glass and mix a drop of water in each. The reaction should be
different. You could also try a drop of antifreeze or a drop of alcohol. You
should be able to see a difference by smell or touch. (Color will not be a
good indicator since each could have a different dye.)

I have never done this experiment, but it should work. Let us know how it
works out.

Drive Safe,

Joe
