Floating and Engine Water

On September 11th, a lot of rain fell in the Detroit area and I happened
to be out driving. I tried to avoid it but eventually got caught in the
water on Telegraph N passing under Michigan Ave., for you who are
familiar with the area.
AAA, was very kind in telling me they would not send out a two truck
until the water had receded but I found an angel with an F-150 who
pulled me out of it. I was actually floating in the water maybe 2 feet
deep, and I didn't even have to get out in it. The carpets got really
soaked but that was about it for the interior.

Anyway to make a long story short. My car, 9000S '88, would not start
after been in the water until after 1,5 days. It eventually started and
nasty water gushed out the exhaust pipe. Drove it home, ca 15 miles, and
let it sit to dry out. Changed the oil, which looked like O'boy (the
chocolate drink) and the air filter was nasty. It ran but really bad,
then the starter quit.
I called in a claim to AAA and had to wait for a shop to take it. This
last friday an adjuster took a look at it and approved the work.
This is what they seem needed: new starter, distributor and wires, mass
flow sensor, idle control motor, complete exhaust system, approx. $1200
worth.
What I thought of later was 'what about carpets and floor mats', so I am
going to call about that.

My concern is this, the engine obviously got water in it. Should I keep
it or should I get rid of it asap? I really like it but have been
thinking of upgrading to a newer one. What else could they have missed
and could possibly go wrong?
Any comments are welcome.

/Pernilla
