Re: Tire Pressure for Better Handling Balance

On several Saab 900s with various tires, I have found 35-36 psig front and 30
rear reduces under steer and increases front tire life. A 1/2 degree of
negative camber will also help, without causing the inside of the tires to
wear. I would not do this for constant highway driving and unless you drive
aggressively. Raising rear pressures makes the under steer worse. For
autocross or racing you can run 1 1/2 to 3 degrees of camber. A rear sway bar
or stiffer sway is a better solution. You can also use stiffer rear springs,
but this takes some care because radical over steer can occur if you go to
far.
Rating the springs is the best way to upgrade or buy a set of performance
Saab specialist who has done the engineering. Real race springs are vastly
stiffer and as a result race shocks have very stiff rebound damping. Stock
front springs are around 150-180 pounds, rear 90-130 pounds on most cars.
Race springs are 500-750 front and 180-200 rear. They do not work well for
the street as a result. That's why most shock mfg. offer street, performance
and racing shocks. You can rate a spring with a common race car formula is
you need a ball park number. Adjustable shocks can work to some degree by
stiffening the rear damping rate. A Nascar trick is to insert a rubber block
between coils which locks out a coil and stiffens the spring. This is cheap,
but they can fall out. That's what they mean when they say Billy Bob is going
to put a rubber in or out during a race.
