Actually, the idea of carrying the spare tire in a recess on the outside of
the trunk, as done by Renault in the Cleo, is not lame at all. The idea has
quite a lot of merit. First, if the spare is used, the dirty flat tire,
covered in brake dust, is not placed in your nice clean trunk. Secondly, if
your trunk is full when you have a flat, you don't have to unload the trunk
to get at the spare; a particularly nice feature in the rain or snow. Come
to think of it, the French seem to have come up with a real good idea.
