Convertible Top Repair

Over the weekend some Harvard Square hoodlum decided to improve the
ventilation in my 95 900S convertible by putting a 1' slash in the middle
of the top between the first and second bows.

Since the slash is not in a stretched area of the top, I was wondering if
it would be possible to patch the top instead of replacing it. Right now I
have it patched from the inside and outside with dacron sail repair tape.

Has anybody else had any success effecting a more permanent repair, either
DIY or professionally?

I was thinking of getting a patch of black treated canvas and using the
same glue that I used to repair the headliner in my wifes 89 900S.

Thoughts or comments would be appreciated. While the car does have
comprehensive insurance coverage with a low deductible (for Massachusetts)
I would like to try the repair route first.

TIA
