Exhaust Flexible Joint

I have a 1994 900 V6. Maryland required a full check on the car for
registration. Part of the check was on the exhaust system. And they found
out that my flexible joint (on the head pipe) is leaking. The mechanic I
work with told me that a new part will cost around $700. So he just took
out the flexible joint and welded a pipe of the same diameter there.

My concern is that there should be a reason as to why there is a 'flexible
joint' there. I guess that the engine might rotate a little bit at the high
torques, so it could crack the pipe rigidly welded there. Of course it's
too late now, I have the job done, but there might be things to do to
prevent that kind of failure, or things I might consider.

I will appreciate any thoughts on this.
