99 Electrical Issues
Posted by John Zimmerman - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.ph (more from John Zimmerman - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.ph) on Wed, 6 Aug 2003 23:24:04

Ever since I had the brakes completely replaced I have had a series of
electrical issues that I have not been able to solve. After questioning the
mechanics who performed the service, they assured me that they did not have
the equipment to do electrical work on the car and that their work was
purely mechanical.

Since that time, my 1979 99GL has functioned erratically. I just pulled it
out of storage (where it had been for six months) and it ran well except
that I am having the same problems. My AMP light stays dimly lit while the
car is running. Turning on the headlights does not affect this, nor does
revving the engine. Whenever I use the turn signals, the AMP light flashes
brightly and the temp and gas gauges droop when the signal light flashes on
and they return to normal when the light flashes off. The AMP light
brightens and the gauges droop when I try to use the horn or wipers (neither
of which work). Is this an alternator problem? I seem to recall having
that alternator checked with no problem when I last drove the car (as these
problems were occurring).

I have also noticed that the car accelerates and decelerates well, but when
attempting to maintain speed, the transmission vibrates violently forward
and backward sometimes popping the car out of gear. Could this be a broken
engine or transmission mount?

I'm in central Louisiana and I don't have access to many Saab mechanics and
I'm happy to perform work myself is someone can walk me through it.

Many Thanks,
John
