If the ding is small (like the size of a quarter), you might try this:

Heat the area with a hair dryer until the ding is hot to the touch. Don't
use a heat gun for removing paint because it will do just that. When the
ding area is hot take an ice cube and place it in the center of the ding.
If there are no braces behind the sheet metal where the ding is, it will
pop right out. You can also use dry ice instead of an ice cube, but use
tongs or something similar to hold the dry ice. You may have repeat this a
couple of times.

I have used this trick to remove dings on hoods, roofs, trunk lids etc. as
a result of hail storms that we get around here in the summer.

If the ding is larger like fist size, sometimes a small plunger used for
unclogging sink drains can pull out the dent enough to use the heat and ice
cube.
