I'm told that the reason for the shift light is that it
gives Saab some slack in the fuel consumption
figures. What I hear is that in fuel consumption
tests the drivers shift when the light blinks rather
than when things begin to 'growl and roar' as you
and I would do. So, they shift sooner and on
balance, burn less fuel since they are not running
up and down hills, etc.

I have been planning to place some black electrical
tape over the display for years now, but I just have
not gotten around to it. Now I just ignore it. If you
really try you can get to the point that you don't see
it. A point of warning: Don't take the same approach
to the 'low fuel' display you you may be walking!
